ABOUT BRAD CARTER

DSCF0051.JPG (411488 bytes)

Brad Carter has been performing in restaurants, nightclubs, festivals, coffee houses, backyards and barns since the mid 1970s.  Over these years he has written more than 200 songs.  Although he was born  in Ft Worth, Texas, Brad spent some of his early childhood in Midland, Texas before his family settled for quite sometime in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas.  However, his youthful suburban living was interrupted when his family moved to a tiny panhandle town, Tulia, Texas in 1973.  Brad finally settled in Lubbock as a young adult in 1977.  His songwriting reflects the diversity of his environment from childhood, through youth and into adulthood, and speaks to the joys and pains of living in both the rural and urban setting.

Brad's first recording, Mountains Rivers and You, released in 1976,  featured his earliest attempts at songwriting.  It was available on LP and 8-track (remember those?), but has been out of circulation since the early 1980s.  In 1979, Brad teamed up with Kevin Haywood, and they toured much of the southwest for more than two years.  This relationship resulted in Carter and Haywood, an LP that featured songs written by both artists.  It was during these years that Brad learned that it's not enough to write and sing well; a performer must be an entertainer.  Carter and Haywood split up in 1980, and Brad has performed mostly solo ever since.

In 1986, Brad teamed up with Lloyd Maines to produce the very low budget Lubbock City Limits. Lloyd not only co-produced with Brad, but he also played lead guitar, bass, and even a little conga. This was the first recording that featured some of the West Texas flavor that would ultimately become somewhat of a trademark.  Lubbock City Limits is still available on cassette only.

In 1994, Brad once again teamed up with Lloyd Maines to produce I Believe in Rainbows, a recording for children and their families.  Other performers included Kenny Maines, Doc Gillespie, and Cary Banks (Maines Brothers Band).  Some of Brad's best songwriting can be found here.   Favorite songs on this CD include Graveyard Tanner and Not Me!, which was subsequently recorded by Texas folk-legend, Alan Damron.   I Believe in Rainbows comes with a songbook featuring hand drawings by Linda Gillespie and is available on CD or cassette.

In recent years, political issues have found their way into Brad's songwriting.  He has recently released a CD that  asks some tough questions and makes some bold statements regarding social and criminal justice in America and abroad.  Collateral Damage: Just Say Know is near one hour in length and has a particular focus on the now infamous drug sting that decimated the tiny Black community in Tulia, Texas.  Brad is an outspoken critic of this sting and the war on drugs in general.  As a result of this injustice, Brad has become active in seeking criminal justice reform, particularly in Texas.  He has worked  with Texas ACLU and as a member of Tulia-based Friends of Justice in an effort to reverse the convictions of all the Tulia defendants.  Brad has made several trips to Austin with family members of those convicted; he has lobbied in both houses of Congress; he has participated in rallies and marches including the Never Again Rally of 2001 in Tulia and a march on the state capitol in 2000. He has toured much of the Western United States performing and speaking  in behalf of the Tulia defendants.
